Splint Therapy & TMD
Gently Relieving the Jaw

Headaches, neck tension, or unexplained jaw pain often have a common cause: an unbalanced bite. With custom-made occlusal splints, we aim to noticeably relieve your chewing system.

The Hidden Trigger

When the Bite Gets Out of Rhythm

The cause of constant headaches, back pain, or tight neck muscles remains a mystery for many patients for years. Often, however, the trigger lies at the very top of the musculature: in the jaw.

  • Nighttime Teeth Grinding: Many people unconsciously process stress during sleep by strongly grinding their teeth together.
  • Jaw Clicking: A distinct clicking or rubbing in the joint during morning yawning or chewing often indicates misalignment.
  • Restricted Function: Often, the mouth can barely be opened wide without pain due to excessive tension.

In medicine, we summarise such misalignments as 'TMD' (temporomandibular disorder). With an accurate diagnosis and small aids, the system can in most cases be very well calmed again.

Diagnostics & Therapy

Releasing the Pressure

Rather than only temporarily alleviating symptoms with medication, we examine the interplay of your jaw closely. Through careful clinical examination, we palpate where exactly your chewing muscles are hardened and how your jaw joint moves.

The most common and most direct help is subsequently a simple, elegantly crafted plastic splint. Similar to a buffer, it absorbs the enormous forces during biting. This way, the jaw can relax in a calm position at night, and the overworked muscles finally get a break.

Why MEDICAL ART?

Advantages of Splint Therapy

Protection of Tooth Substance

The splint slides protectively between the dental arches. Your own tooth enamel and beautiful crowns are thus protected from friction.

Muscle Relaxation

Through the smooth plastic, the unconscious grinding pattern (the constant rubbing of teeth against each other) is gently interrupted.

Relief for the Neck

Since the jaw muscles are closely connected to the neck muscles, relaxation at the top often also helps against stiff necks in daily life.

Holistic Network

Should the jaw be only part of a deeper postural problem, we are happy to work together with experienced physiotherapists.

The Path to More Relief

Daily jaw pain and persistent tension can be very burdensome for everyday life. A precisely fitting splint is a very gentle and caring way to help the body with long-term self-regulation.

A standard nighttime occlusal splint is generally a straightforward service that we discuss transparently with you in advance.

Costs & Reimbursement

Costs of Therapy

The basic production of a splint is regulated by statute, while very in-depth cause investigation must be considered individually.

  • Simple plastic splints (often called grinding guards) are usually subsidised by statutory health insurers.
  • If we need to measure and palpate the jaw's movement pattern in great detail, we inform you clearly about this private service beforehand.
Your Treatment Process

Course of Splint Therapy

01

Discussion and Examination

We take time to understand your complaints, gently palpating the cheeks and jaw very carefully and without pressure.

02

Impression of the Teeth

So that the splint fits optimally, we take measurements. Instead of sticky material in the mouth, we preferably use our comfortable, impression-free 3D scanner.

03

In-House Production

Our own practice laboratory at the Bogenhausen location produces your new plastic splint according to the exact scan data.

04

Fitting and Adjusting

We try the splint on together and file away the smallest interfering edges until your bite feels noticeably freer and comfortable again.

An Examination Completely Without a Drill

Many patients have concerns about a dental visit, especially when chronic pain already exists. We take these worries seriously and proceed through every step gently and at your pace. The good news: for a pure appointment about jaw joint complaints, the treatment chair stays almost in rest mode. We don't need to drill or anaesthetise anything. Everything proceeds through visual examination, careful palpation, and scanning the teeth. An appointment where you can stay completely relaxed.

Sometimes the solution for constant tension lies much higher than expected. Those who give their strained jaw a gentle break at night gift the entire body more rest.

Frequently Asked Questions About TMD

TMD stands for 'Temporomandibular Disorder' (in German: Craniomandibuläre Dysfunktion/CMD). This is the medical term for complaints that arise from an unfavourable interplay between the skull (cranium) and the lower jaw (mandible) – such as jaw pain, constant clicking, or muscle hardening.
Often a partner draws attention to the nighttime sounds. Otherwise, typical signs are morning headaches, a feeling of 'muscle soreness' in the cheeks, and teeth that have recently become increasingly sensitive to cold.
In most cases, the complaints can be very well alleviated. The jaw responds very positively to small reliefs in many cases. With a good splint and often a few relaxing exercises for home, the tissue can recover very well.
The easiest way is to clean the splint in the morning with clear water and a separate, soft toothbrush along with some mild soap. Aggressive cleaning tablets or hot water should be avoided, as they can make the fine plastic dull or brittle.
