Discolouration from Within
Not every tooth discolouration can be eliminated with a standard dental cleaning or external bleaching. When the colour of an individual tooth changes significantly, the cause often lies deep within the tooth interior.
- •Consequence of Root Canal Treatment: When the tooth nerve is removed, the remaining tissue inside the tooth can decompose. The released breakdown products embed in the dentin and discolour the tooth from within.
- •After a Dental Accident: Trauma can also cause the tooth nerve to die, and the tooth gradually takes on a greyish or brownish colour over time.
- •Visible in the Front Tooth Area: Particularly on the front teeth, a single dark tooth is immediately noticeable and is perceived as disturbing by many patients.
External bleaching does not work for these discolourations, as the colour pigments are inside the tooth. This is where internal bleaching comes in.
Brightening from Within (Walking Bleach)
With internal bleaching, a gentle whitening agent is placed directly inside the tooth. Since the tooth has already been root-treated and no longer has a nerve, the treatment is generally pain-free.
The bleaching agent remains in the sealed tooth for several days and gently breaks down the embedded colour pigments. This process can be repeated if necessary until the desired shade is achieved.
Why Internal Bleaching?
Targeted and Gentle
Only the affected tooth is treated. The neighbouring teeth and gums are maximally protected.
Pain-Free Without Anaesthesia
Since the tooth nerve has already been removed, the treatment is generally pain-free.
Substance-Preserving
The existing root canal access is used. No additional tooth substance needs to be removed.
Alternative to Crowning
In many cases, internal bleaching can replace a crown or veneer and preserve the natural tooth.
Experiences of Our Patients
An Investment in Your Smile
Internal bleaching is a comparatively cost-effective aesthetic treatment and often a very gentle option to harmoniously reintegrate a discoloured tooth into the dental arch.
You receive a transparent cost plan in advance. We are also happy to check whether your insurance covers part of the costs.
What Is Covered by Insurance?
Internal bleaching is a private service that is generally not covered by statutory health insurers. Private insurers often reimburse costs proportionally.
- ✓Billing follows the dental fee schedule.
- ✓Compared to a crown or veneer, internal bleaching is significantly more cost-effective.
Step by Step to Natural Tooth Colour
Examination and X-Ray
We check the condition of the existing root filling and ensure the tooth is suitable for internal bleaching.
Preparation of the Tooth
The existing root canal access is opened. A protective barrier is applied over the root filling to prevent the bleaching agent from reaching the root.
Placement of the Bleaching Agent
The whitening agent is introduced into the tooth cavity and the tooth is provisionally sealed.
Exposure Time and Review
The agent works over several days in the sealed tooth. At a follow-up appointment, the result is assessed and the placement renewed if necessary.
A Relaxed Treatment
Since the affected tooth no longer has a nerve, internal bleaching is a comparatively relaxed dental treatment. Anaesthesia is usually not necessary. To open the old filling, the tooth is gently prepared without painful removal of healthy tissue. The individual sessions each take only a few minutes.
